Database and Speadsheet Use in the Classroom

Reflect on why students should use Databases and Spreadsheets in the classroom. In doing so, focus on your content area and the specific advantages and disadvantages of integrating this software in your future classroom.

I believe that students could use spreadsheets and databases as a tool to separate similar information so that it is easier to understand. For instance, if you were to teach a lesson on astronomy you could set up a database that showed the planets sizes, atmosphere's, distance from the sun, surface temperatures, etc. This would be very helpful way to separate the information in an easy understandable way. You could also make a plot graph to show a visual comparison of the different information in the database. For example, if you used the astronomy database you could make a plot that compared the distances from the sun or the surface temperatures of each planet.

Why we should use Spreadsheets and Databases in the classroom.

Reflect on why students should use Databases and Spreadsheets in the classroom. In doing so, focus on your content area and the specific advantages and disadvantages of integrating this software in your future classroom.

I am looking forward to teaching at the kindergarten level. Databases and spreedsheets would be a helpful tool to use in the classroom. When teaching astronomy or health these programs would give the children a new perspective when looking at information. The database plots could show the children different facts about the subject you are teaching. For instance I made a database on the facts of the planets in the universe. The facts include diameter of each planet and distance the planet was from the sun. The children would be able to compare and contrast the differences between each planet. The only down fall I see in using these types of programs would be the difficulty level for a kindergartener to use.
